Songs To Dance To

Welcome to the “Songs To…” series on “Being In Tune!”

Each week, I’ll be heading to social media in search of your input for your go-to songs, ones that you listen to in different situations (like, when you’re relaxing, or when you’re sitting in traffic). Give me your feedback, share your thoughts, and become an even bigger part of this musical journey. I'll give four of your picks and one of my own.

Songs To… Dance To

Let me lay a little bit of truth on you guys: I raise a secret eyebrow at people who say they “don’t dance.”

I’m sure we all know at least one person who, at a party, wedding, or even on a night out, says “Nah I’m good, I don’t dance.” They defer to a corner or stay at their table, wave people off who try to encourage them, and seem content to watch from afar. No matter how much peer pressure is put on them, they don’t budge.

I have a theory about this, and here it is: Regardless of your public resistance to dancing, I’m certain that we all have at least one song that makes your hips move and your heads bop. Maybe it happens in the privacy of your own home, which is totally fine, but I’m fully convinced that it does happen because your feedback was fast and plentiful with songs that always make you dance. You must be a bunch of dancing fiends publicly, privately, spontaneously, or all of the above!

I think we’ve all got that “one song” (or maybe one dozen songs, but who’s counting), where the second we hear the introduction we can’t help but move. Some songs have become iconic with signature dance moves. Others are probably iconic for you, and maybe your closest friends, with your signature dance moves.

Dancing is fun, a great stress reliever, and actually can create a feeling of community. That party, wedding or night out? All of these are social gatherings, where dancing can be a focal point and a way to bring people together to loosen up and have a good time. Here are some of your favorite dance tunes:

Your Picks

℗ 2016 Epic Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment

“Champagne Problems”
Meghan Trainor

Fun and flirty, perfect for a girls’ night.

℗ 1979 MJJ Productions Inc.

“Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough”
Michael Jackson

Anyone else exhaust themselves trying to dance and hit those MJ high notes? Just me?

℗ (C) 2008 SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT

“Single Ladies”
Beyonce

Giving your hands a life of their own since ’08.

℗ 1996 The copyright in this sound recording is owned by Virgin Records Ltd

“Wannabe”
Spice Girls

That first “YO” comes in and the crowd goes wild! (Bonus points if you know the rap breakdown.)

My Pick

℗ 2004 BMG Music

“You Make My Dreams”
Hall and Oates

This dancing fool was caught at work doing her awkward shoulder-shimmy, bunny-hop, leg-kick when Hall and Oates came on during a class. I was in the back of the studio and thought I was out of view, but I turned around and saw a student giggling at my utterly professional dance display. And I have to say, I wasn’t even embarrassed. This song always makes me smile a gigantic cartoon smile and basically lose control of my limbs in succumbing to the beat, so I’m cool with being caught if it put a smile on someone else’s face.
